How to Buy Diamonds

How to Buy Diamonds

Introduction

The 4C’s as they are referred to are, Clarity, Cut, Colour and Carat weight. These are easy terms to explain with the diamond in front of you but as previously mentioned beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The most important but rarely used “C” is Confidence. Confidence, that the diamonds, coloured gemstones and jewellery are purchased at the best prices. That you have confidence and trust in us to offer you the best value in the jewellery you buy.

We promise to offer you honest advice good service and value for money.

Please feel free to visit the shop at any time, where we will do our very best to help and advise you.

How do you buy a Diamond with confidence?

Very simply! As with all things that mean the most to you, choose the one you like the most.

Something in that miracle of nature will capture your heart. It may be the shape and colour or the sparkle of light dancing from each carefully cut facet. Probably it will be a combination of these factors that will make your gemstone special to you.

Yes, there is a more scientific way but to some degree that is a matter of personal opinion. When buying diamonds or other gemstones for our stock firstly we apply the same method as you will, that is, does the gemstone or item of jewellery look beautiful. If we think it does, only then will we apply other criteria specifically to check it’s value for money. Many of these factors are individually special to ourselves only.

That is part of the magic in jewellery.

What is a Diamond?

Diamonds were formed hundreds of millions of years ago deep in the bowels of the earth. Under immense heat and pressure the chemical element Carbon was fused into what we know as Diamond.

Crystallisation took place and volcanic activity thrust the magma towards the earth’s surface, where the rough diamonds cooled in Kimberlite pipes. Millions of years of natural erosion and more recently mining of the Kimberlite has revealed the earths secret. Then only 50% of the diamonds mined are of gem quality. An amazing 250 tons of ore has to be mined and processed to produce one carat of gem quality diamonds. It was man’s natural inquisition that unlocked the real fire and beauty of diamond by cutting facets at specific angles. Using the light to reflect back from inside the diamond then refract into the wonderful colours seen dancing on its surface.

Diamonds are found in thousands or possibly millions of varieties. From the Colourless (blue-white) to black, through every colour and hue possible. Blue, pink, yellow, brown, green, red, orange and more. These extremely rare gems are virtually never seen, even by those in the jewellery industry. Other chemical elements reacting with the carbon molecules cause these “fancy” coloured diamonds. Some are:- Pink- Magnesium: Yellow- Nitrogen: Blue- Boron: Green- Exposure to radiation. Natural inclusions of every size and intensity further add to the variety of diamonds found. At Ce’ the jeweller we only use diamonds where these inclusions have little or no effect on the brilliance of the stone. We all buy diamonds because of their special ability to reflect and disperse light into a colourful sparkle.

I am sure you can now see why only you can choose that special gem we know as a Diamond.
